K&N Filters use a pleated, oiled cotton fabric element. Paper elements depend upon microscopic holes to filter, as these become clogged the filter efficiency drops. Dirt particles collected on the surface of a K&N filter element have very little effect on air flow because there are no small holes to clog. Particles are stopped by crisscrossed oiled cotton fibers and held in suspension by the oil. This results in a 30% or more better air flow rate than paper filters whilst maintaining filtration efficiency, also being pleated, it has a bigger surface area than that of a flat foam filter.
Whilst a Hiclone creates a vortex to present an ordered, denser airflow, one of the limiting factors is air filter restriction. Basically, you can't get more air into the engine if the air filter is holding you back. These two fuel saving products complement each other. The K&N filter allows more air, the Hiclone provides the means to move it.
As with any air filter this depends on the conditions you are driving in. As a rule of thumb, quadruple the kilometers in which you would replace a standard paper filter and clean at this interval. e.g. if you normally replace every 10,000km then you should clean at 40,000km. On a street driven vehicle a K&N air filter can last up to 80,000km before a service is required.
